Competitions

Sporting Events at the Games Include:

  • 3 on 3 Basketball
  • 5K Race
The 5K at the Games is actually two events conducted concurrently. The first is a road race, which is one of the twelve sports that are being organized for transplant recipents ("Athletes") competing in the Games. The second is a run/walk for organ, eye and tissue donation awareness, which is open to all other Games participants ("Non-Athletes") and the general public. Athletes register for the "5K Road Race" as one of the competition options in the Sports section of their registration. There is no additional charge to participate in this event and, as stated in the Upgrades section of the Athlete's registration, the public 5K Race t-shirt is not included. However, this t-shirt can be purchased as an upgrade for an additional $8. Non-Athletes register for the "5K Race for Organ, Eye and Tissue Donation Awareness" in the Upgrades section of the online registration and pay a fee of $15 thru June 5th (or $20 on race day). This fee includes a 5K t-shirt. If you have any additional questions on this subject, please feel free to contact Tiffany Kirk or Loni Spector directly for further clarification.

    Dear Cycling Competitor:

One note of clarification regarding the last email--the bicycle transportation is provided to you as a convenience in getting your equipment to North Park.  If you have your own transportation, there is no need for you to turn in your bicycle to our transportation team.  Please be sure, however, to arrive in North Park before 8:30 a.m. so that you will not be affected by road closures.  Parking will be available where the bicycle transport trucks will be located., and in small lots in the general area.

Also, we have received an invitation from the UPMC Cycling Club for cyclists attending the Transplant Games to participate in the UPMC Time Trial and Community Cycling Day on Saturday, July 12th, at the Club's Washington Boulevard oval.  The Club's invitation follows:

"Please let the participants know that we have individual and team time trials scheduled for July 12 in Pittsburgh at our fantastic bicycling track near the zoo.  Our team web page has all the details, directions, and registration information:
    http://www.upmccycling.com

We would love to have their participation!  Our contact information is included and we would be happy to answer any questions.  Thank you."

    Dear Cycling Competitor:

Click here to find maps of the 5K Time Trial (scheduled to begin at 9:30 am) and the 20K Road Race (tentatively scheduled for 12 noon).

Getting There--Bicycles will be picked up at 6:30 am on Tuesday from two locations--the David Lawrence Convention Center (10th Street East Lobby Side) and the Holiday Inn Select Oakland.  After leaving your bicycle, you may board Games transportation from the same location for the 30-40 minute trip to North Park.  Upon arrival at North Park, you will pick up your bicycle at the North Park Football Stadium Parking Lot on Lake Shore Drive.

After the cycling competition is over, you will return your bicycle to the same truck where you picked it up.  The trucks will then return to the same pick up locations in Oakland and Pittsburgh at the conclusion of the event.  Any bikes not picked up after the return trip will be dropped off at the Convention Center and kept in the lost and found room in the west lobby. Please do not miss your truck's return or you will have to deal with recovering your bicycle on your own.
